SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 29. (Press Europa) –
The Minister for Tourism and Employment of the Canary Islands Government, Jessica de León, expressed gratitude on Tuesday for the efforts made by the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, to mediate in order to prevent the tourist strike in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which the PSOE deems indicative of the counsellor’s “failure.”
“There was an effort right up until the last moment, but it was not achievable,” she stated during the Parliamentary control session, recalling how she met with both workers and employers “on numerous occasions and without a single photo” because she was determined that “there would be no spectacle.”
De León questioned “what exactly the socialists are celebrating,” suggesting that they seem pleased that workers do not have a “better wage,” as they are acting “against” the government. “It characterises them,” she remarked.
She further stated that they “always” monitor and assess the “reputation” of the tourist destination, which is invariably impacted when there are “spikes” such as protests, strikes, or particular remarks from public officials. “I’m not in flames,” she asserted.
Gustavo Santana (PSOE) acknowledged the unions and workers, highlighting that it is “just” for them to strive to regain their purchasing power while criticising the counsellor for having “completely failed.”
He mentioned that “mediation never took place” since CCOO, the instigator of the strike, did not acknowledge it, resulting in a “voluntary and hazardous” endeavour that culminated in its “significant failure” after being dismissed by its own executive.
He also pointed out that “the conflict is far from resolved” and emphasised who is “most stimulating” the scenario by asserting that the protests “endanger the reputation of the destination.” “It is provocateur of the strike and a peril for workers,” he said.
