The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, has voiced the “strong and resolute” opposition of the governing team to the expansion of operations at the North Tenerife airport, arguing that it would detrimentally affect the quality of life for residents in nearby areas and degrade the heritage value of their homes.
Gutiérrez has engaged with local community groups that have raised concerns regarding the disturbances caused by the airport’s operations and the ramifications of a potential extension to its operating hours.
The City Council, alongside the neighbourhood coordinator for those affected by the North Tenerife airport, will jointly petition AENA authorities to reconsider this potential extension, as well as urge the airport’s operating company to implement sound measures and road safety protocols to mitigate the impact on community wellbeing.
The municipal governing body has submitted an institutional motion along these lines for debate at the plenary session, hoping for unanimous support.
The motion also calls upon AENA to provide comprehensive and up-to-date details regarding the operations of North Tenerife Airport in La Laguna.
The Cabildo de Tenerife and AENA will be asked to coordinate with the City Council of La Laguna to conduct specific studies assessing the noise impact of airport operations, adhering to municipal noise regulations and European Union aviation standards.
Another initiative proposed by the municipal government is to establish a mixed commission comprising representatives from the City Council, Cabildo, AENA, and the neighbourhood coordinator of those impacted by Tenerife Norte airport. This would facilitate a continual platform for dialogue, oversight, and collaborative efforts regarding the airport’s situation and its effects.
