Residents and business owners in the SantacruceroBarrio de la Cruz del Lord have been enduring an “intolerable” situation for several months. This turmoil originates from the influx of individuals, primarily homeless, who gather daily around the Church Square to engage in drug trading, consume alcohol excessively, beg, and even set up a market for the illegal sale of items allegedly retrieved from rubbish bins.
The locals have raised their concerns with the municipal police, revealing that “the littering caused by these individuals is on the rise,” as stated by the affected residents.
The community describes a distressing incident from the previous week, where police intervention was necessary for a person exhibiting signs of mental health issues who appeared almost undressed and wearing only socks, while shouting and causing havoc in the neighbourhood. Ultimately, officers managed to subdue the individual and requested an ambulance, but the situation was out of control and completely unbearable.

Moreover, this already strained scenario, which has persisted without resolution from the city council, is compounded by the presence of an illicit market where unlicensed vendors utilise the walls of the planters surrounding the square to establish an unregulated space, selling everything from clothing to second-hand books.
Residents and business owners near this contentious area express their frustration, claiming to be “exhausted from enduring the troublemakers who repel customers and create anxiety in a neighbourhood that was peaceful until recently.”
Consequently, the concerned civilians of the Lord’s cross request an increase in municipal officer presence in the locality and demand that the items they offer for sale be confiscated to deter them from returning. “We simply wish to restore normalcy to our community and have these individuals leave for good,” they assert.
Vagrants, filth and illicit trade in the church square
The Church Square in the Cruz neighbourhood of the Lord in the capital has become overrun by vagrants, immigrants and substance abusers, transforming this city corner into an open-air encampment. Refuse bags, beer cans and discarded papers, along with cigarette ends, overflow from bins, creating a filthy environment that also attracts flies and cockroaches. Locals and shopkeepers navigate this chaotic situation daily alongside numerous individuals soliciting money at the corners. “We can’t take it anymore,” they lament.
