Strong Winds and Rough Seas: Yellow Warnings for the Canary Islands This Sunday

Windy conditions expected on Sunday with moderate gusts from the Northeast, including intense bursts in southeastern and northwestern areas, as well as the summits and ridges of the mountainous islands, where there may be very strong gusts. This has prompted the State Meteorology Agency to issue Yellow warnings in several regions of the archipelago.

Specifically, on Sunday, yellow warnings will be in effect due to wind gusts that might exceed 70 kilometres per hour in La Gomera and Gran Canaria, with warnings for rough seas along the coasts of both this island and Tenerife.

In the northern parts of the mountainous islands, expect overcast skies with a chance of light, sporadic rain, primarily during the early part of the day, while other areas will generally be partly cloudy. There will be minimal changes in temperature.

Regarding sea conditions, Aemet forecasts winds from the northeast at speeds of 50 to 61 kilometres per hour (force 7) along the southeastern coast of Tenerife, as well as the southeast and west of Gran Canaria. In other areas, winds will range from force 3 to 5, potentially reaching force 6, especially in inland waters. Generally, there will be swells or rough swells, particularly from the north or northwest, with wave heights reaching up to two metres.

Here is the forecast for the islands this Sunday:

Lanzarote

Characterised by cloudy skies, with a tendency towards overcast conditions in the east and south by the afternoon. Some light drizzle cannot be excluded at dawn. Temperatures will remain relatively stable. Moderate winds with intervals of strong Northerlies are predicted, especially in the interior during the afternoon.

Minimum and maximum temperatures anticipated in Arrecife: 16 and 22 °C.

Fuerteventura

General cloud cover will increase to cloudy intervals by the afternoon. Light drizzle is also possible at dawn. Temperatures will see little change. Moderate winds with strong Northerlies will prevail, particularly in the west and the Jandía area in the afternoon, where very strong gusts may also occur.

Minimum and maximum temperatures expected in Puerto del Rosario: 17 and 23 °C.

Gran Canaria

In the north and interior, there will be predominantly cloudy skies with chances of light, sporadic rain, especially during the first half of the day. Other regions will generally be partly cloudy. Temperature variations will be minimal or may slightly decrease for maximums. Moderate winds with strong Northeasterly interludes will be noted, particularly in the southern and western slopes, as well as the South and West Cumbres and Medianías, where very strong gusts are likely.

Minimum and maximum temperatures forecasted for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: 17 and 21 °C.

Tenerife

The north will have predominantly cloudy skies with the possibility of light, occasional rain, particularly in the early part of the day, which could also occur in the Northeast throughout the day. Other areas will have cloudy intervals, mainly in the western and southern parts during the afternoon. Temperatures will remain relatively stable, with slight increases at summits. There is a low chance of light frost in higher central peaks. Moderate Northeasterly winds will produce strong gusts in the northwestern tip and east, where very strong gusts may develop. Breezes are expected along the west coast.

Minimum and maximum temperatures anticipated in Santa Cruz de Tenerife: 18 and 24 °C.

La Gomera

Cloudy conditions are expected in the north and interior, with chances of light rain during the first half of the day. The rest will see variable cloud cover. Temperatures will remain relatively stable. Moderate Northeasterly winds will be evident, with strong gusts in the southern and northwestern slopes, particularly in the South Cumbres and Medianías where very strong gusts may occur. Breezes are likely along the southwestern coasts.

Minimum and maximum temperatures expected in San Sebastián de la Gomera: 17 and 22 °C.

La Palma

The northern and eastern regions will predominantly experience overcast conditions with possible light rain, especially in the northeastern areas during the first half of the day, with some chance of rain remaining during the rest of the day. Other areas will have variable cloud cover with cloudy skies in the afternoon. Temperatures will remain stable or may slightly decrease, particularly at summits and in the interior. Moderate Northeasterly winds will occur, with strong and northwestern interludes, especially in the El Paso area, where very strong gusts are anticipated. Breezes will dominate on the southwestern coasts.

Minimum and maximum temperatures forecasted for Santa Cruz de la Palma: 18 and 19 °C.

El Hierro

Variable cloud cover, with cloudy conditions prevalent in the north during the early and late hours. There is a chance of light, occasional rain in the northern regions, particularly during the early hours, with some light drizzle also possible elsewhere. Temperatures will remain relatively stable. Moderate Northeasterly winds with strong intervals expected in the southeastern slopes, northwestern tip, and Cumbres, where very strong gusts may be likely.

Minimum and maximum temperatures forecasted for Valverde: 12 and 15 °C.
