The embers of the significant bonfire that reverberated across the Canary Islands on April 20, 2024, reignite ahead of a fresh call to action. ‘Canary Islands has a limit’ has declared a new demonstration on May 18, akin to the 20A event that traversed the streets of the main cities within the archipelago and marks its anniversary. The motive? “To oppose the economic model that is pushing the islands to their limits.”

This group shares this information on their social media platforms, where they have initiated a new movement that, for the moment, is only organised in Tenerife, with a gathering point at Weyler Square in the capital of Chicharrera. The demands presented are numerous and are detailed in this post: “Protection of natural areas and ecotasa, a moratorium on tourism and holiday homes, suspension of illegal mega-projects, regulation of housing purchases by foreign nationals, and residence legislation.”

In a joint appeal to advocate for the rights of the Canarians on the streets, ‘Canarias has a limit’ aims for the archipelago to unite and demonstrate in various locations. In a recent statement, they stressed that “It is crucial for all individuals who feel unrepresented by this model to have the opportunity to voice their opinions“

“The commencement of a new chapter”

The collective asserts the inactivity of the relevant authorities following the protests of 20th April 2024. Furthermore, they caution that the forthcoming demonstrations signify “the commencement of a new phase of resistance: more resolute, more direct, and more challenging for those who refuse to listen to us and implement genuine changes.”

At present, there are seventeen collectives supporting this initiative. In recent weeks, the social media channels of ‘Canary Islands has a limit’ have been inundated with posts addressing the various issues that have accumulated within the archipelago, each articulating different protest themes.

Background

On October 20, various mobilisations took place across the islands, including in southern Tenerife. This was a second demonstration that joined those of the 20A event. If repeated on May 18, it would be the third occasion in just one year that hundreds of individuals take to the streets to protest against the economic model of the Canary Islands.

The various declarations from key figures, both current and future influencers of the archipelago, are now in the past. The president of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, remarked that “If I were a citizen, I would likely participate” and stated “Things have to change” shortly after the mobilisations.

The movements against the archipelago’s economic framework, predominantly driven by tourism, have transcended our borders. This has manifested not only in small gatherings in cities like Berlin but also resonated with citizens globally. “We must listen and be a part of the solution, rather than the problem” was the sentiment echoed from the United Kingdom.

    Yours sincerely

    Mr T C O’Rourke
