The City of La Laguna, through the Department of Presidency, has initiated a Complaints Channel aimed at gathering information regarding alleged serious or very serious criminal and administrative infractions related to the Council.
This instrument enables residents to submit complaints either anonymously or identified, ensuring in all situations the confidentiality of the complainant and the tracking of the case.
The mayor of the locale, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, mentioned that with this new channel, the battle against corruption is enhanced, and citizen involvement in the prevention and identification of possible fraud cases is encouraged, which are often unreported due to fear of retaliation.
He further stated that this system facilitates the direct handling of incidents that violate regulations or, where necessary, promptly communicates them to the Public Prosecutor’s Office or other relevant authorities.
Fines of up to 300,000 euros for false information
The Councillor for Presidency, Carla Cabrera, clarified that this initiative stems from the adherence to Law 2/2023, of February 20, which regulates the protection of individuals who report on legal standards and combat corruption.
She also noted that deliberately disclosing false information constitutes a very serious offence, and existing regulations impose financial penalties ranging from 30,001 to 300,000 euros for individuals engaged in such conduct.
The individual appointed by the City Council will be responsible for investigating and assessing any irregularities reported through the channel, proceeding according to the relevant regulations.
If a complaint includes a contact email address, the complainant will receive updates regarding the progress of the process or its possible resolution. In instances where the complaint is not anonymous, the identity of the complainant will be kept confidential and may only be disclosed to the judicial authority, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, or the pertinent administrative body in the course of a criminal, disciplinary, or sanctioning investigation.
