The most Andalusian of the Laguneras Processions took place this Holy Tuesday in La Cuesta. A large crowd braved the chilly evening to gather in the Plaza de la Candelaria and witness the procession of the meeting, an event that continues to attract more and more attendees year after year.
Shortly after seven o’clock in the evening, the depiction of Our Father Jesus Captive before Caifás set off from the Parish of La Candelaria, accompanied by the brotherhood of Jesus before Caifás and Our Lady of Dolores. At the same time, the Church of La Paz and La Unión saw the release of the image of Mary Most Holy of Dolores, which made a remarkable exit from the temple, with its knees touching the ground to navigate the tight confines of the porch.
Following a lengthy journey through the neighbourhood streets and crossing the main road, the Virgin’s image, accompanied by the Municipal Corporation and the Brotherhood of María Santísima de los Dolores, arrived at the Plaza de la Candelaria, where the highly anticipated encounter with Jesus Captive occurred, creating one of the most magnificent and moving moments of the Holy Week Lagunera.
In contrast to the other processions within the historic centre of La Laguna, which reflect a clear Castilian influence, this one draws more from the Andalusian tradition, featuring Sevillian-origin images carried on the shoulders of the costalers, alongside their saetas and displays of popular devotion.
The inaugural meeting occurred in 1993, when both processions first intersected thanks to the memorable Jacky Romero, who not only commissioned the crafting of both images in Seville but also facilitated the establishment of their respective brotherhoods, giving rise to what has now become one of the key highlights of the Holy Week in La Laguna.
