CCOO Claims Employers Intimidate Workers to Thwart Holy Week Tourism Strike

Santa Cruz de Tenerife 11 Apr. (Press Europa) –

Workers’ Commissions (CCOO) has accused tourist employers on Friday of “intimidating” employees to discourage them from participating in the upcoming strike during Holy Week scheduled for April 17 and 18.

According to the union, “they threaten dismissal, attempting to coerce by suggesting that those who join the strike will face repercussions. They also inform employees in an effort to instil fear about a right they possess, exploiting the precarious employment and wage crisis that they have created themselves.”

The union further indicates that workers intending to support the strike are being offered “holidays and time off,” to such an extent that they have lodged several complaints because companies wish to “minimise the repercussions of the strike” by offering up to 100 euros for those who report for work on the strike dates or by promoting recruitment through temporary employment agencies.

“We are at a pivotal moment, akin to the 1978 strike, where those courageous individuals secured rights that we still benefit from today. It is the duty of workers not to relinquish a right as significant as that to strike,” states the union.

As a consequence, CCOO warns that it will not permit “the working class to be silenced,” and plans to stand firm in its “defence.” “We will ensure the strike is successful and that workers can exercise their right, a fundamental right of the working class,” they affirm.
