Tenerife’s Metropolitan Under Scrutiny Following Tram Accident Investigations

The Provincial Labour and Social Security Inspectorate of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has advised Metropolitano de Tenerife to establish its own prevention service and has mandated the company to investigate driving incidents, according to the relevant report accessible to Europa Press.

These recommendations arrive as a result of requests made by the Federation of Services to the Citizenship of Canary Obreras Commissions (FSC-CCOO), which has been advocating for these actions to be taken by Metropolitano since the strike commenced in February 2024, as celebrated by FSC-CCOO on Thursday.

In addition, the inspectorate has instructed the company to revise its Occupational Risk Prevention Plan to ensure it complies with current regulations and remains a viable management tool.

It is also recommended to integrate preventative measures, either by appointing employees or by establishing its own prevention service, considering the intricacy of the company’s operations.

The timeframe to rectify these shortcomings is set at six months.

Accident Investigation

The report alerts the company regarding its “duty” to investigate workplace accidents that involve tram operation, including the involvement of safety representatives in these inquiries.

Additionally, the report underscores the need to inform representatives at the moment they become aware of the accident about their access to the investigation report.

FSC-CCOO further emphasizes that the inspection highlights these measures as essential to ensuring the safety and health of workers, as well as adhering to the legal obligations prescribed by law.
