The Cabildos of Tenerife, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura have activated their insular emergency plan (PEIN) following the rain alert issued for the Canary Islands, which came into effect from this Wednesday at 00:00. This information has been communicated to the island authorities in a notice.
On Tuesday morning, the island councils convened with Cecos 1-1-2 and the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government to ensure monitoring and coordination of the Emergency Plan in light of the evolving situation.
In Tenerife, access to recreational and camping zones managed by the Cabildo has been restricted. Additionally, transit on forest tracks and paths impacted by the significant fire of 2023, as well as those in Teide National Park that lead to the peak, is prohibited, alongside barranchism activities on the island.
Furthermore, officials from Tenerife held discussions with the 31 municipalities to update them on the situation affecting the island and particularly concerning areas prone to flooding, to implement necessary preventive measures.
The Department of Citizen Security and Emergencies of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has activated the Municipal Emergency Plan (PEMU) in response to the rain alert effective from 00:00 on Wednesday, April 9.
Currently, in Fuerteventura, sports and outdoor activities have not been suspended. However, with the PIN activation, the island’s security and emergencies department, alongside the Insular Water Council and local municipalities, have increased their personnel and activated additional services, including those for roads and the environment.
Areas at risk of flooding may include Barranco de Gran Tarajal, the Endorreica basin of Lajares and La Oliva, Barranco de Tirir, Barranco de las Playitas, Barranco de Casillas del Ángel, and Barranco de los Varichelos (El Mugral).
Additionally, the Canary Islands Government has declared a pre-alert for coastal phenomena starting from 19:00 on Tuesday, storm alerts from 06:00 on Wednesday, and wind warnings from 12:00 on the same day.
Borrasca Olivier is expected to bring heavy and intense showers, potentially reaching 15 to 30 mm in one hour and 40 to 80 mm over twelve hours, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms and severe wind gusts that could exceed 70 kilometres per hour.
