The hotel and extrahotel association of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro (Ashotel) supports the expansion of the area of significant tourist traffic (ZGTA) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This initiative would permit the shopping centres in Cabo Llanos to open every Sunday, an area currently outside the Central Zone, where retailers can operate any day throughout the year.
Juan Pablo González, the director of the hotel association, stated yesterday to a local newspaper that, “from the perspective of the hotel industry, we clearly advocate for the capital to be a vibrant city seven days a week, which, at present, seems not to be the case, particularly on Sundays. When there are no planned activities to stimulate it, although we acknowledge that various commercial interests are at play.”
González further remarked, “regarding the controversy surrounding the request for the ZGTA extension, we recently communicated our stance to the mayor via a letter. In this correspondence, we invited the conflicting parties—namely the representatives of small and medium enterprises on one side and large stores on the other—to join a trade meeting on May 6 to find a consensus solution.”
“We strive to enhance the city’s economic and commercial dynamism and urge merchants to make an effort to reach a mutually beneficial agreement for everyone.”
