Yesterday, the Plenary Session of the City of Puerto de la Cruz unanimously approved the regulation of the water supply and sanitation service, supported by all parties. This regulation aims to facilitate a more efficient and sustainable management of these vital services within the city. Additionally, the draft for the construction and operation related to these services received the green light, which encompasses an investment programme and a Master Plan. This initiative is crucial in preparing the public service concession contract, promising a significant enhancement in infrastructure and service quality for all residents.
The existing administrative concession, which pertains to the provision of potable water, sewage systems, and stormwater management, was initially awarded for a duration of 30 years, but has been expired since 6th September 2021. During this period, the Government Group (PP-ACP-CC) indicates that there have been no considerable investments in the supply and sanitation systems, leading to current issues, such as the wastewater problem in Playa Jardín.
Marco González, the PSOE spokesman, explained the opposition’s support, noting that the initiative was commenced during the previous term, specifically in 2021 when he served as mayor. “We extend our support to establish a proper settlement and to adhere to the law for a 30-year contract, and subsequently address the legal certainty needed to initiate a concession process that must ensure the supply and sanitation of the city for the coming decades,” he stated.
He further conveyed to this newspaper that his affirmative vote “also aims for the government to openly share all information regarding the city’s necessary investments, including that of the regional desalination plant which must be assessed and involve all city stakeholders, including the Stop platform, to evaluate the potential environmental impact it may impose on the coastline.”
During the plenary session, the newly appointed nationalist councillor, Elsie María Tavío Ribal, took office following the resignation of Diego Moreno Padrón. She will oversee the areas of commerce, industry, crafts, and the primary sector, similar to her predecessor. “Her experience and commitment will significantly benefit the council and the municipality,” remarked the mayor, Leopoldo Afonso.
