The Plenary of the City of La Orotava approved yesterday a budget amendment of nine million euros, supported solely by the Popular Party (PP) group, while the PSOE and the Assembly for La Orotava chose to abstain. This adjustment aims to incorporate this year’s accounts and allocate funds to various initiatives aimed at enhancing the municipality.
María Jesús Alonso, the spokesperson for the PSOE, expressed her discontent, stating that this allocation is presented “as a closed package by CC”, questioning specific expenditures such as the nearly 400,000 euros for the party area and 340,000 euros for the study room, “which is almost equivalent to the cost of the property”. In contrast, she pointed out that social spending only received “200,000 euros”.
Aida Salazar, from the Assembly for La Orotava, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the surplus was utilised “due to a failure in executing previous investments as a result of poor forecasts from CC.”
Salazar highlighted that certain allocations, like the one for Opuntia Park, are “difficult to comprehend”, given its relatively new status, and deemed the amount designated to social welfare as “ridiculous”. She concurred with the PSOE, asserting that CC “is not facing any opposition at all.”
Ildefonso González of the PP emphasised that his group “strived to ensure these accounts are fairer for citizens” and elaborated on the proposals included in this fresh investment package. However, he cautioned that they “will be vigilant and ensure these actions are executed rather than remaining merely on paper.”
The Treasury councillor, Felipe David Benítez, provided clarification on some assessments, particularly regarding the funds allocated to social welfare. He indicated that the 2025 budget allocates around 7 million euros for social welfare, “a historic figure that guarantees comprehensive support for individuals, making this the area with the most significant growth.”
