The various departments within the Santa Cruz City Council are currently preparing for the organisation of ‘Armed Forces Day’, which will take place on 7 June along the Maritime Avenue in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Following the confirmation last November by the Chief of the General Staff of Defence, Teodoro E. López, to the city’s mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, that the invitation extended by the municipal council had been accepted for the central events of this celebration to occur in the capital, the different municipal departments have been collaborating with the Ministry of Defence and the Chief of the General Staff to arrange the day’s festivities.
The military parade will be accompanied by a comprehensive schedule of activities, also happening around Maritime Avenue. This will include static and dynamic displays of equipment, a military music gathering, as well as exhibitions of personnel and materials.
‘Armed Forces Day’ will necessitate alterations to traffic and circulation during both the parade and preceding activities. These changes will be communicated in advance to ensure that local residents and visitors have alternative mobility options during the days when the avenue is impacted, as outlined in a communication from the City Council.
Further details regarding this event will be announced at a press conference on 23 April at the General Captaincy of the Canary Islands in the capital.
“We are working diligently to ensure a successful celebration of this day, and I extend my gratitude to all the departments involved for their tremendous effort in preparing for this occasion,” stated Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez.
The mayor also recalled that the Canary Islands have not hosted a similar event since 1986, describing it as a “very special moment, still remembered in the islands,” particularly as the then Prince of Asturias participated as a Cadet Knight alongside the General Academy of Zaragoza.
He concluded by emphasising that “it would be an honour to welcome the King as the supreme commander of the Armed Forces and the Princess of Asturias, should their military training permit it.”
