Arona (Tenerife), 31 (Europa Press)
The mayor of Arona, Fatima Lemes (PP), acknowledged on Monday that there is “unease” among the residents of Los Cristianos regarding a potential expansion of the port, yet she emphasised that no “decision” has currently been made.
In an open letter addressed to the community, she explains that the technical report prepared by the College of Civil Engineers on the maritime connection between the ‘Green Islands’ and Tenerife is merely a “technical analysis document” presenting various alternatives. Therefore, she believes that fostering a dialogue grounded in “reliable and thorough information” is essential.
“A comprehensive understanding of the report will enhance the debate and prevent interpretations that may cause unnecessary confusion or concern among citizens,” the mayor states in her letter.
Lemes highlights that the City Council does not possess direct authority over port planning but remains “on alert” and is committed to acting as the “voice” of the public’s wishes.
“We share the concern over the current congestion in Los Cristianos and will ensure that any future decisions do not adversely affect our quality of life. Consequently, we will persist in advocating for sustainable solutions that are based not only on technical aspects but also on social and environmental considerations,” she remarked.
The mayor reiterates that “only through truthful information and constructive dialogue” can progress be made towards solutions that benefit all stakeholders involved.
“We must avoid any form of confrontation and instead seek a collaborative approach with those who need to comprehend the reality faced in Los Cristianos,” she concludes.
