Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 27 Mar. (Europa Press) –
The Minister for Social Welfare of the Government of the Canary Islands, Candelaria Delgado, asserted on Thursday that the Supreme Court’s order for precautionary measures indicates that the situation concerning migrants in the Canary Islands is a “challenge that must be addressed through national policy.”
“This news is very encouraging because the Supreme Court’s statement aligns with what we have been advocating for a considerable time from the Canary Islands. This is not merely a specific issue for the Canary Islands; as stated by the Constitutional Court, the matter concerning migrant minors is supra-autonomous and must be governed by a national policy,” the regional councillor communicated to the press.
She also emphasised that these minors “hold rights that must be upheld,” for which they deserve “effective solutions,” and reiterated that regarding asylum, it is the Spanish state that is “the sole authority.”
“We are discussing boys and girls who have fled war-torn countries, who have endured unimaginable hardships on their migratory journey, and who have faced extremely difficult circumstances. International law affords them specific rights, and we have requested that these rights be acknowledged from the very beginning,” she added.
