Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 27 Mar. (Europa Press) –
The National Secretary for Organisation of CC, David Toledo, described the measure issued by the Supreme Court yesterday as “good news” for the Canary Islands Government, which mandates the State to care for unaccompanied minors seeking asylum in the islands. He believes this shows a “neglect of responsibilities” on the part of the government.
“This illustrates who has been at the forefront of the migration crisis in the Canary Islands from the very start,” remarked Toledo, referring to the president, Fernando Clavijo. He further emphasised, “It highlights the failure to fulfil responsibilities, as dictated by the Supreme Court,” which has granted the state government a period of 10 days to take charge of over a thousand children and young individuals who have applied for asylum in the Canary Islands.
The nationalist leader reiterated that “the Canary Islands have effectively managed this humanitarian crisis, and it is now, after 18 months of perseverance from Fernando Clavijo’s government, that the efforts are bearing fruit, as victory comes to those who work diligently.”
He noted that the Decree Law for the Reform of the Foreigners Law, alongside the measures issued today by the Supreme Court and the call for solidarity from the Constitutional Court, represents “the positive outcomes” of a regional government that has “solely” supported more than 5,800 unaccompanied minors and has fought to protect the rights of children and the best interests of the minor.
“In contrast stands a Spanish Government that has taken 18 months to address the humanitarian crisis at its southern border, leaving a completely overwhelmed system for the thousands of children and young individuals requesting international protection or asylum. They should have been promptly integrated into the National System of Reception of International Protection, ensuring their rights and alleviating pressure on the Canary reception system,” he added.
