Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 26 Mar. (Europa Press) –

The Vice-President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Manuel Domínguez, expressed his dismay on Wednesday that, “once again”, the judiciary, through the precautionary measures endorsed by the Supreme Court, has had to intervene to confirm that it is the State “that must take care of a thousand minors seeking asylum as migrants.” He urged the Government to address this ongoing situation that is being endured in the archipelago.

In comments released by the Executive, he noted that the “obligation of the State” compelled the regional government to appeal to the Supreme Court, which this Wednesday highlighted “the necessity to cater to just over a thousand children currently in the Canary Islands.”

“The Supreme Court states that, in a scenario of overcrowding and with the best interests of the child in mind, these children should have been attended to by the State over a year ago. Therefore, we once again urge the Government of Spain to tackle this issue we are facing in the Canary Islands, as these boys deserve, as these girls deserve, and as this archipelago deserves,” he commented.

Domínguez also mentioned that two other appeals are still awaiting resolution from the Supreme Court; one concerning funding and another regarding the protection of unaccompanied minors: “We hope there will be no appeal from the State that prolongs this situation of care for unaccompanied minors who are entitled to asylum and to fulfill their responsibilities, as has been the case for a year and a half.”
