The Municipal Operational Coordination Centre (Cecopal) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has announced the hoisting of the yellow flag on Las Teresitas beach due to the presence of specimens of Physalia Physalis, commonly referred to as the Portuguese man o’ war.

Additionally, the supplementary flag for marine wildlife has been raised to alert beachgoers to the risks associated with this particular species.

A provincial Red Cross boat from Tenerife will be deployed to monitor the bathing area for any additional specimens. Should there be any updates or incidents, authorities will communicate the information through official channels.

Hazard of the Portuguese Man O’ War

The Physalia Physalis is a type of cnidarian whose sting can result in severe pain, skin irritation, and even serious allergic reactions in individuals who are sensitive. While it may resemble a jellyfish, it is, in fact, a colony of organisms that function collectively.

It is advised to avoid any contact with these creatures, both in water and on the sand, as they can continue to release toxins even after they’ve died.

Authorities emphasise the importance of adhering to the instructions given by emergency personnel and refraining from bathing if a marine wildlife warning is in effect.
