The Local Police of La Laguna has suggested at this week’s Coordination Table of the Viogén Protocol to accommodate more victims of domestic violence.
The initiative from the La Laguna Council aims to alter the VIOGÉN protocol to include medium-risk cases, thereby enhancing the efforts of the family and women’s care unit (UFAM) within the National Police, as detailed in a statement from the local governing body.
Badel Albelo, the Councillor for Citizen Security, indicates that the Local Police’s Gender Violence Unit currently comprises five officers and an inspector, who “now possess the capacity and resources to manage a higher number of cases within the municipality.”
The councillor points out that, according to the protocol signed in 2022, the Local Police are only permitted to oversee unattended and low-risk cases.
“Our aim is to examine the possibility of modifying this protocol so that our officers can also take on medium-risk cases, which would assist in alleviating the workload of the National Police Unit in our municipality,” he states.
The Viogén police coordination table convenes quarterly to assess instances of gender violence within the municipality and to evaluate collaborative procedures, such as compliance, contributions, and task distribution.
