Inés Rodríguez: Harnessing Humor for Connection and Visibility

Inés Rodríguez (Tenerife, 1999), renowned for her role as a speech therapist and creator of social media content (@unusual), has established a significant presence on platforms such as Instagram and Tiktok, where she boasts more than 200,000 followers. Her unique approach involves addressing disability with a hint of humour, which not only renders the subject approachable but also fosters a positive effect on societal perception.

In a recent interview with our team, Inés revealed that her use of humour wasn’t a deliberate choice. “It wasn’t a conscious decision to be humorous. It just comes naturally to me, and I believe that’s what people appreciate—it’s not forced,” she states. For her, her videos mirror her everyday life and the small situations she encounters. This genuine approach resonates with her audience, who value the authenticity with which she tackles intricate topics. While acknowledging that there are moments when a more serious tone is necessary, humour remains her primary means of connection.

The impact of her content has been extraordinary. “It has always been very well received,” Inés notes. However, she stresses the significance of well-executed humour: “Not everyone can do it or knows how to approach it with respect.” Through her distinctive style, she has cultivated a community that feels recognised and supported. “Ultimately, the everyday aspects of life should be embraced with humour. If I began to complain constantly on my social media, people would tire of me,” she adds with a grin.

Despite her social media growth, Inés has successfully maintained a balanced view on its usage: “I have never allowed myself to become addicted to social media and currently, even less so.” She is cognizant of the detrimental effects of misusing these platforms and chooses not to focus on negative comments. “Though I don’t receive many negative remarks, I try to avoid looking at them since my mind also needs a break from the saturation that social media can create,” she explains.

Regarding technological advancements and their societal impact, Inés believes education is crucial. “Technology itself is fantastic and evolving rapidly,” she expresses with enthusiasm but emphasises the necessity of educating individuals on its responsible use: “Providing proper education on how to utilise social networks and technologies is essential to maximise their benefits.”

The inspiration for content creation can vary, a reality that Inés openly acknowledges. “If I lack inspiration, I won’t post anything,” she asserts without hesitation. Her relaxed approach allows her authenticity: “If I force it, it won’t flow. So if I have to go three weeks without posting because I lack inspiration, that’s fine. In the end, I do this because I want to, not because I rely on my social media for a living.” This practice enables her content to be perceived as genuine and relatable by her followers.

Inés also receives heartwarming messages from her audience; many parents with children who have disabilities have shared how her videos have helped them view life through a more optimistic lens. These messages are what have most surprised this communicator, who values the vast array of information available today due to technology. “In the end, these parents, upon seeing people like me who can live well despite their disabilities, gain a different perspective on the same challenges. I wish my parents had access to this kind of information. It’s wonderful that today’s parents can express their situations because of social media,” states Inés.

In the fast-paced world of social media, where public visibility can be both a launchpad and a hurdle, we find a content creator and communicator who has navigated this landscape with impressive ease. When asked about the obstacles she has faced in her creator journey, Inés was straightforward: “I haven’t encountered significant difficulties. For me, it’s been a relatively smooth journey, and I feel very comfortable with what I do.”

Her dedication as a communicator is unwavering, yet she admits to certain topics she’d rather not discuss publicly. “By steering clear of certain matters, I shield myself from losing an audience that I cherish and wish to reach,” she confesses. Despite this tension between freedom of expression and public accountability, she articulated her philosophy: “I must say that I find it very hard to stay silent. I need to express my feelings. In that regard, I’m sometimes a bit ‘mouthy’,” she admits with a chuckle.

Looking ahead, this Tenerife native is excited about technological advancements that assist individuals with disabilities. “I am passionate about seeing new communication systems and accessible technologies for those with reduced mobility emerging,” she said. She highlighted innovations like ocular tracking systems and devices that enhance communication, pointing out that such developments were unthinkable two decades ago.

Nonetheless, she also emphasised the need for increased investment in healthcare to ensure these devices are accessible to everyone. “If these devices were more affordable or fully covered, it would be a dream come true,” she concluded.

Finally, in light of the increasing anxiety that newcomers to social media may experience, her advice is clear and straightforward: “Do what you love.” In a sphere where every voice matters, she encourages emerging creators to express themselves fearlessly. “There will be those who appreciate your content and those who won’t, just like in real life,” she remarked.

Through humour and authenticity, Inés Rodríguez continues to dismantle barriers and promote an open dialogue about disability, becoming an inspiring voice for many and illustrating that optimism can indeed be infectious.

We firmly believe that their contributions are vital to innovation and sustainable development,” states Carmen Pérez, Delegate Councilor of the Development Society. With these remarks, Carmen reinforces the event’s commitment to female empowerment and inclusion in a sector rife with challenges yet abundant in exciting opportunities.

Moreover, the councilor expresses great enthusiasm for the participation of Inés Rodríguez in this edition: “Inés exemplifies how passion and dedication can unlock doors in the realms of technology and social media.
