The UGT-SP union, which represents the majority of the home help subsector in the Canary Islands, expressed its concerns yesterday regarding the conditions faced by home help workers in La Laguna, a grievance that has also garnered support from the Canarian Intersindical.
“Workers’ salaries have remained stagnant for three years, coinciding with the expiration of the service contract in the municipality. However, the fees charged by the winning company have risen in accordance with the increases in production costs reflected in the municipal budgets,” stated the union.
Consequently, “we cannot comprehend the nature of the increases that have prompted these price hikes, especially when the primary expense is the salary, which has not changed since 2022.” The union emphasised that “efforts to engage with the City Council have gone unanswered, and we are considering legal actions to demand salary increases for the workforce, who are already in a vulnerable position.”
