The Local Government (PP-ACP-CC) of Puerto de la Cruz has called on the PSOE representative in opposition, Marco González, to tender his resignation following the “serious falsehoods” mentioned regarding the Analytics of Playa Jardín. “The municipal administration carried out after the change of governance and the motion of censure has yielded more positive outcomes in a few months than in the five years of socialist incompetence, during which this beach was closed for swimming several times without any measures taken to permanently resolve the situation,” asserts the governing team.
Furthermore, it stresses that, as of December 17, 2024, the samples provided by public health at this bathing location have indicated favourable results, as outlined in Royal Decree 1341/2007, dated 11 October, which regulates the quality of bathing waters.
The General Directorate of Public Health of the Canarian Government has verified that the thresholds of 185 for intestinal enterococci and 500 for Escherichia coli have not been exceeded, including the most recent sample obtained in mid-March, thereby supporting the positive trend towards reopening the beach this summer.
“This exemplifies the PSOE spokesman, Marco González’s, lack of understanding regarding the regulations and their proper interpretation. He is exclusively referencing one of the three ranges established by the regulations, omitting the other two, which affirm the positive stance of the Government of the Canary Islands and the City Council. If the PSOE cannot comprehend a regulation properly, it clearly reflects how it has irresponsibly harmed Puerto de la Cruz through its ineffective management,” the local government expresses.
In this regard, the mayor, Leopoldo Afonso (PP), wishes to clarify that his team’s administration “has been exemplary compared to the recent past. The claims made by the PSOE spokesman are not only incorrect but also reveal a profound ignorance of the regulations. It is crucial that public officials act with responsibility and transparency. He should reconsider his statements and contemplate his resignation.”
The conservative leader accentuates that the City Council has been developing a strategy to reopen the beach for swimming this summer. “Several key objectives have already been achieved, such as the installation of a generator set in Punta Brava to prevent power shortages at the pumping stations and to avoid uncontrolled discharges. Additionally, pumps in the EBAR have been replaced to enhance their efficiency and lessen the risk of spills. These measures are undertaken in collaboration with the company responsible for the entire water cycle and include a thorough cleaning of the Ebar storm drainage system.
