Santa Cruz de Tenerife 21 Mar. (Europa Press) –
The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Canary Islands Government will allocate 557,487 euros from its own budget, through a modification, to cover the full expenses related to the refurbishment of the two sports venues that will host the Eurobasket U18 women’s event in La Palma, from 5 to 13 July.
These venues are the Roberto Rodríguez Stell pavilion and the Severo Rodríguez pavilion, located in Santa Cruz de la Palma and Llanos de Aridane, respectively. The adjustments necessary to meet the standards set by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) for this event will require investments of 350,000 euros and 207,487 euros.
In the Palmera Capital, the renovations will encompass the replacement of the flooring, procurement of certified equipment such as level 1 hoops, videomarkers, boards, and spare rings, along with 24-second cubes in 360 degrees, and enhancements to the changing rooms, including the provision of wireless connectivity.
Conversely, in the Severo Rodríguez pavilion in Llanos de Aridane, the comprehensive renovation of the locker rooms, treatment of the wood to meet FIBA 2 specifications, and installation of possession markers and certified videomarkers for international competitions will be carried out, according to a statement from the Ministry.
This investment aims to ensure that La Palma meets all the necessary requirements to host a premier international championship, simultaneously creating a direct and lasting effect on the island’s sports infrastructure, particularly benefiting grassroots sports.
Consequently, these initiatives are anticipated to enhance the usability of these facilities for local clubs and school athletes, ensuring that the legacy of Eurobasket endures well beyond the event itself.
The Canary Islands Government has wholly undertaken financing for these enhancements following requests from the involved municipalities, who indicated their inability to manage the renovations independently.
This collaboration between administrations reflects the intent of the sports sector of the Canarian Executive to support La Palma, an island renowned for its basketball heritage, in hosting an event of this calibre, which bolsters its profile in organising international competitions, as well as demonstrating the capacity of the archipelago to accommodate prestigious sporting events.
