Local police reported on Friday that a 43-year-old man was apprehended in the capital of Tenerife for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, with his 11-year-old son accompanying him.
The arrest took place last Wednesday on the Santa Andrés road, where a car was observed driving in an “erratic” manner. The driver subsequently abandoned the vehicle on foot and assaulted one of the officers, as noted in the statement.
The individual, known as ASB, had his 11-year-old son in the vehicle, and following police intervention, he declined to undergo a breathalyser test.
The incident began when a group of cyclists on that road alerted a local police patrol heading towards Taganana.
The cyclists reported the erratic behaviour of a vehicle they had encountered, prompting the officers to change direction. At the height of María Jiménez, they identified the potential offender.
As the officers attempted to verify the vehicle’s information, the driver began to flee on foot, leaving the engine running and his son still inside the car.
One officer pursued the man on foot, and when he caught up with him, the suspect struck him with his elbow. The officer had to subdue him as he also attempted to grab the police’s service weapon, according to the statement.
The police made various inquiries until they located the child’s mother, who was in another municipality of Tenerife. She requested the officers to take her son to his school, where she would pick him up.
Officers from the unit associated with the juvenile’s Prosecutor’s Office took him to the school and handed him over to the staff at the centre.
The municipal tow truck removed the vehicle to a depot, and the arrested individual was taken to a medical facility before being transferred to the police units, where he was placed at the disposal of the appropriate judicial authority.
