Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 21 Mar. (Europa Press) –
National Police officers have apprehended a 36-year-old British national at Tenerife Airport under a European arrest warrant issued by Portuguese authorities for drug trafficking offences.
The arrest took place in early March when authorities at the southern airport of Tenerife detected the potential arrival of the suspect on a flight from East Midlands, England, as indicated by police sources in a statement.
Consequently, a coordinated effort was activated to confirm the identity of the fugitive, leading to a passport control check where his identity was verified, resulting in his arrest.
The search for the suspect stemmed from his involvement in a significant drug trafficking case in Madeira (Portugal) that occurred in 2019.
According to the charges, the arrested individual and six others were intercepted by the Criminal Police of Portugal outside a hotel in Madeira while transporting a total of 11.465 kilograms of cocaine in various packages, distributed among backpacks and bags.
These events received extensive coverage in the media across Portugal and the United Kingdom.
The detainee was subsequently transferred and placed at the disposal of the judicial authority, which ordered his provisional detention while the extradition process to Portugal is underway.
