Santa Cruz de Tenerife 20 Mar. (Europa Press) –
The Our Lady of Candelaria Hospital has initiated a new protocol that permits women undergoing a caesarean section to have support during the procedure.
The aim of this measure is to facilitate a positive caesarean experience, ensuring that the woman feels well-supported at all times, emotionally nurtured, and actively involved in the arrival of her baby, as the hospital noted in a statement.
Over the last decade, they report that the rate of these interventions has reduced by 17.2% within the hospital facility, in an effort to align with the standards set by global organisations. Last year, more than 2,000 deliveries were recorded, with 1,149 girls and 1,198 boys born.
Protocol Requirements
To utilise this protocol, there are specific criteria that mothers must fulfil: the caesarean must be scheduled—meaning it is not performed urgently due to prior complications—comprising singleton pregnancies or cases where the gestational age exceeds 36 weeks, among others.
Additionally, they clarify that emergency caesarean sections and cases of high obstetric risk, as well as situations involving maternal-fetal instability or complications related to anaesthesia, are excluded.
The hospital emphasises that this protocol ensures the safety of both the baby and the mother at all times, whilst promoting the effective execution of the caesarean section, given its complexity as a surgical procedure.
Consequently, once the mother expresses her wish to be accompanied—whether by her partner or a relative—clear instructions will be provided for her companion to ensure that the procedure is conducted while safeguarding health precautions.
These guidelines include the immediate departure of the companion in case any complications arise, or following a specific protocol designed to ensure a safe birth experience.
