The senator from the Gomera Socialist Group (ASG), Fabián Chinea Correa, has submitted three inquiries to the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, regarding the timeline for implementing the shared reception of unaccompanied immigrant minors.
The Gomero representative has described the launch of this initiative as “a success”, due to the efforts made by the Canary Islands government, political parties, and the wider community of the islands, as he stated in a press release on Wednesday.
“It is now crucial to adopt all necessary measures to ensure the execution of a law that has already been passed and will ultimately facilitate the shared reception of immigrants arriving in the Canary Islands and the autonomous city of Ceuta,” he added.
Therefore, Senator Chinea will inquire with Minister Ángel Víctor Torres about the deadline for the Government to implement the shared reception of unaccompanied immigrant minors who arrive in the Canary Islands and Ceuta.
He will also seek details about which budget allocations will ensure government financing for the reception of unaccompanied immigrant minors across the autonomous communities.
Lastly, he intends to question what measures the Government has in place to ensure that the autonomous communities adhere to their obligations concerning the joint management of unaccompanied immigrant minors, a matter he has admitted “concerns” him now that the legal reform has taken effect.
Chinea highlights how the situation has transitioned from a “solidarity that has failed dramatically” to a legal mandate requiring the shared responsibility for the reception of unaccompanied immigrant minors.
Consequently, he has advocated for ensuring that regional governments comply with the new shared responsibility criteria, albeit “with stable funding from the central government.”
“At this point, it is vital to clarify issues and eliminate any excuses that regional governments might raise to postpone or evade their shared responsibilities,” stated the ASG senator.
