Santa Cruz de Tenerife 18 Mar. (Europa Press) –
The spokesperson for the Gomera Socialist Group (ASG), Casimiro Curbelo, expressed his approval on Tuesday regarding the Council of Ministers’ endorsement of a royal decree that amends article 35 of the Foreigners Act, aiming for the redistribution of unaccompanied migrants among autonomous communities. He urged that this initiative be processed and implemented swiftly, as no community can presently oppose it.
Casimiro Curbelo reminded that “the Canary Islands have been striving for quite some time to accomplish the goal of having other autonomous communities share the responsibility for the unaccompanied migrants who have arrived on the islands, amounting to more than 5,500, due to the excessive strain on their facilities.”
Thus, he welcomed a decision that, “for the sake of fairness, should have been taken long ago, prior to the breakdown of solidarity, and now must continue its procedure and be confirmed in the Courts.”
He mentioned that, as he had previously indicated, “the agreements reached in some areas to support the governance of Catalonia will now facilitate the validation of the royal decree by the majority in the Congress of Deputies.”
He asserted that “no autonomous community can refuse to accommodate the unaccompanied migrants that are allocated to it, even if they do not agree with the contents of the Royal Decree Law.”
In his view, “the Canaries and the Canary Islands are confident that other autonomous communities will accept minors, whether they like it or not,” he stated.
He also elaborated that “the migratory crisis is a reality” being experienced in the Canary Islands, highlighting the necessity of amending the legislation so that the guardianship of foreign minors is assumed as a legal obligation by all autonomous communities.
