Santa Cruz de Tenerife 15 Mar. (Europa Press) –
The Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Services and Navigation of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, alongside the Cabildo de Tenerife through its natural environment, sustainability, security, and emergencies department, has supported 13 SMEs on the island in calculating their carbon footprint.
This initiative aims to assist these businesses in aligning with state and regional regulations, which stipulate that the calculation and registration of the carbon footprint becomes obligatory this year for medium and large enterprises, as noted in a statement from the Chamber.
Lola Pérez, the general director of the Chamber, emphasised that this action reflects the commitment of both institutions to bolster the business sector in Tenerife, enhancing its competitiveness while ensuring adherence to existing regulations.
“We aim to aid our companies in adapting their operations to meet new market demands, including the increasing necessity for sustainability,” she added.
Alejandro Molowny, the island’s director of waste, highlighted the significance of implementing corporate social responsibility strategies within businesses.
Both representatives reiterated the requirement for large and medium enterprises engaged in specific economic activities in the Canary Islands to formulate energy transition plans. Small businesses, as suppliers within the value chain, must proactively respond to customer requests and calculate their carbon footprint.
The Chamber of Commerce asserts that these certifications will grant competitive benefits to the SMEs involved, improving their scores in tender processes.
Moreover, SMEs have demonstrated their dedication to lowering their carbon footprint in the upcoming years through various initiatives, such as enhancing energy efficiency, installing solar panels, and upgrading their vehicle fleets to electric or hybrid models.
Furthermore, the Chamber notes that the installation of movement sensors to boost energy efficiency in offices, along with training programmes on sustainability and environmental education for staff, are also part of this commitment.
