With the participation of all the councillors who have endorsed the motion of censure negotiated for over eight months and broadcast by this publication since then, the headquarters of the Citizen Service (SAC) in Granadilla de Abona, located in the town centre opposite the town hall, saw the recording of the motion on Wednesday morning at 8:30 am. This motion strengthens the tripartite alliance of the right (PP) and Spanish CC nationalists in the islands. The pivotal figure for this initiative (Marcos Antonio Rodríguez from the PP), considering the firm refusal of the other popular councillor, Bianca Cerbán, attended the event but opted not to appear in the moment’s photograph. Although it had emerged on Monday that he was contemplating the pressures involved, it was confirmed this morning that Rodríguez has agreed to a governmental shift aimed at displacing the socialist Jennifer Miranda from the Mayor’s office and reinstating Domingo Regalado (CC), who is currently serving as an advisor to Fernando Clavijo in the Canary Islands Presidency.
The Clavijo party continues to contextualise this notable shift in its cooperation with the centralist ultra-right Vox, even though the president himself stated on Tuesday, in the regional Parliament during the debate on Canarian nationality, that it is a party “which cannot be trusted” due to its stance on immigration, its breaking of autonomous governments for such reasons, and its blackmail concerning budgets. Furthermore, he even attributed the left for their emergence in institutions and, despite frequently criticising some of their tenets or positions, he had claimed for years that they would never align themselves with “the extremes of Vox and Podemos of Arona and the 57,000 of Granadilla, according to the 2024 census. In fact, this motion of censure should not come as a surprise since Vox had already lent their support to CC during the inauguration in June 2023 and formalised their government agreement in a documented format endorsed by the senior leadership of both parties.
In Granadilla’s case, it now remains to see what actions mayor Bianca Cerbán will undertake, as various sources have recently indicated to this publication that she may end up joining the government. However, she has consistently stated, since Canary Islands Now and Notices Diary reported on these negotiations last August, that it is illogical or unjustified to execute a censure against her fellow PSOE members and Mayor Miranda.
Additionally, it remains to be seen whether the other crucial councillors who advocated for the motion, who had previously been part of the PP before switching to CC due to animosity with Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, will end up as advisors in the regional government or in other administrations, or if they will return home after resigning from their positions.
