Carnival Weekend in the Canary Islands: Expect Chubascos, Wind, and Big Waves!

The State Meteorology Agency (Aemet) anticipates for this Saturday a predominance of overcast skies with precipitation, more pronounced in the form of showers across the northern and western aspects of the mountainous islands, and less likely in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

Minimum temperatures are expected to remain stable or increase slightly, while maximum temperatures may decrease slightly to moderately, with the most significant drops occurring in the northern and elevated regions, alongside a moderate northwest wind featuring strong intervals and gusts that could be locally very intense in the Summits of western Tenerife.

Regarding sea conditions, there will be a northwest or west wind force ranging from 3 to 5, with the northwest reaching 4 or 5; a gentle swell increasing to a strong swell, and the sea in the northwest expecting heights of 1 to 2 meters, rising to 3 to 4 meters, with occasional heavy showers.

Severe sea conditions this Saturday in the Canary Islands

The Government of the Canary Islands, via the General Emergency Department, has declared a Pre-alert for coastal phenomena across all islands starting from 8:00 am on Saturday, March 8.

This resolution is based on information provided by the State Meteorology Agency and other available resources, and it falls under the specific Emergency Plan for the Canary Islands concerning adverse weather risks (PEFMA).

The alert impacts the Northern Coasts of La Gomera, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria; North and West Coasts of El Hierro, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote; as well as the west coast, north and northeast of La Palma.

The forecast anticipates combined sea swells of 3 to 5 meters. A general northeast wind at force 3-4 (12-28 km/h), with regions experiencing force 5 (29 -38 km/h). Furthermore, there will also be significant to strong swells and sea elevations in the northwest predicted at 3 to 4 meters.

The expected conditions by islands for this Saturday are as follows:

Lanzarote

Overcast skies will dominate, with some clearing expected at the beginning and end of the day. Occasional light rainfall is possible, mainly in the north and west, and a chubasco cannot be ruled out. Minimum temperatures will see a slight rise, while maximums are likely to drop slightly to moderately. There will be a moderate wind from the west, shifting to the northwest by midday.

Expected minimum and maximum temperatures (°C): Reef 15 21

Fuerteventura

Predominantly cloudy skies with some clearing early on. Light rain may occur occasionally, especially in the west, and a chubasco cannot be entirely discounted. Temperatures will remain stable or may increase slightly. Moderate wind from the western direction will shift to northwesterly by late morning.

Expected minimum and maximum temperatures (°C): Puerto del Rosario 16 21

Gran Canaria

Intervals of clouds, becoming increasingly overcast by midday with light rainfall forecasted mainly in the north, interior, and east, where rainfall may occur as a chubasco. Minimum temperatures will remain fairly stable. Maximum temperatures may decrease slightly to moderately in the north and east, remaining unchanged in other areas. There will be a light to moderate wind coming from the west, turning northwesterly during the latter part of the day when strong gusts may occur in the northeastern slopes.

Expected minimum and maximum temperatures (°C): Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 16 20

Tenerife

Cloudy intervals will likely become fully overcast in the morning, except along the southwest coastlines. Light to moderate rainfall is expected from the morning, particularly in the north and east, potentially as a chubasco. Heavy rainfall may be expected locally on the northern slopes, with persistent downpours in some areas. Minimum temperatures will remain stable or see a slight increase. Maximum temperatures will remain stable in the southwest but decrease across the rest, with notable drops possible in interior northern and eastern areas. A moderate northwest wind will feature strong intervals on the ridge until midday, with more intense gusts likely in the afternoon in the southern and southwestern metropolitan areas. In high summits, expect strong winds from the west with the potential for severe gusts, especially early in the day.

Expected minimum and maximum temperatures (°C): Santa Cruz de Tenerife 16 20

La Gomera

Cloudy intervals will trend towards fully overcast conditions by midday, particularly in the north and interior regions. Expect occasional light rainfall, especially in the north and west during the day, which may occur as a chubasco. Minimum temperatures will see little change or a slight increase, while maximums will remain steady in the southwest, with slight to moderate declines elsewhere. Moderate northwest wind with strong gusts in the southwest and southern slopes, particularly intense later in the day, with the possibility of severe gusts in Cumbres during the first half.

Expected minimum and maximum temperatures (°C): San Sebastián de la Gomera 15 20

La Palma

Overcast clouds will prevail. Light precipitation may occur mainly in the north and west during the first part of the day and in the east during the afternoon, potentially as a short downpour. Temperatures will remain largely unchanged or see slight increases. Maximum temperatures will tend to stay the same in the southwest but may decrease slightly to moderately across the rest of the island. Moderate northwest winds, with strong gusts from the northeast and southern regions, may lead to very intense later streaks early in the Medianías. In high peaks, strong winds may occur, with locally very intense gusts, especially earlier in the day.

Expected minimum and maximum temperatures (°C): Santa Cruz de la Palma 16 20

El Hierro

Cloud intervals will be present, with overcast conditions expected in the north during the morning and at day’s end. Occasional rain of a light nature is anticipated, particularly in the north and during the morning; this may occur as a shower. Minimum temperatures will remain stable or see slight increases. Maximums will be stable in the southwest but may decrease slightly to moderately elsewhere. Moderate northwest wind with strong gusts possible on the northeast and eastern slopes, as well as in Cumbres, where severe gusts cannot be ruled out during the early hours.

Expected minimum and maximum temperatures (°C): Valverde 12 15
