Sea waves coupled with swells that may reach heights of five metres in exposed regions are anticipated.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 7 Mar. (Europa Press) –

The General Emergency Directorate of the Canary Islands Government has announced a Prealert for coastal phenomena, which will commence at 08:00 on Saturday. This is due to the expected deterioration of sea conditions over the upcoming weekend along the northern coastline of La Gomera, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria; the North and West coasts of El Hierro, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote, as well as the West, North, and Northeast coasts of La Palma.

This resolution has been made based on data from the State Meteorology Agency alongside additional reputable sources, in accordance with the specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for adverse weather risks (PEFMA), as noted by the Regional Executive Department.

Forecasts indicate a poor state of the sea, with waves ranging from three to five metres in height. Generally, winds will be from the northeast, at a force of 3 – 4, with speeds between 12 and 28 kilometres per hour; in coastal regions, winds may reach 29 to 38 kilometres per hour.

Furthermore, areas of significant swells are expected, especially in the northwest, with waves between three and four metres high.

Recommendations

In light of this situation, the Canary Islands Government urges residents to take extreme care along the coasts of the impacted islands due to the rough sea conditions. They emphasise the necessity of adhering to self-protection advice to mitigate risks.

Consequently, it is advised to refrain from walking along the coastline and driving vehicles on roads adjacent to the beach. Additionally, postponing nautical or sporting activities is recommended, and bathing in unmonitored beaches is inadvisable. It is crucial to avoid areas such as jetties and remain well away from the shoreline to prevent injury from waves.

For safety, if one notices unusual wave activity, they should not stay close to the sea or approach it, even if the conditions seem to settle. If others are present in hazardous locations, it is important to raise awareness of the dangers. In case of an emergency, it is vital to immediately dial 112 and provide details of the situation to mobilise the necessary response teams.
