Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 6 March. (Europa Press) –
The General Corps of the Canarian Police, through the Environmental and Cultural Heritage Protection Group (GRAMA) of the Administrative Surveillance and Inspection Unit (UVIA), in conjunction with Rural Guardian agents from the Civil Guard, have apprehended an individual harvesting Canarian clams (Haliotis Tuberculata) within a protected zone at Colmenares Beach in San Miguel de Abona.
The Canarian clam holds significant value for the Canarian ecosystems, and its collection is strictly forbidden without the appropriate permits. Consequently, they have initiated a report for breaching the relevant regulations, as stated by the Canary Police in a communiqué.
The authorities highlight that such initiatives are vital for safeguarding protected natural areas and reaffirm the necessity of adhering to environmental regulations to maintain biodiversity and the ecological equilibrium of these regions.
The cooperation among various units and specialised agents facilitates effective governance and fosters heightened awareness regarding the importance of compliance with environmental protection laws.
The Administrative Surveillance and Inspection Unit is tasked with preventive policing, investigation, and reporting of administrative offences in areas including, but not limited to, the environment and natural resources, tourism management in the Canary Islands, Canarian cultural heritage, tax administration, transport, gaming, and betting, along with any other responsibilities delegated to it, as per the resolution of 17 January 2025 by the General Directorate of Security.
