Easier Access to Teide Trails for Federated Members During Snowy Conditions

The Cabildo de Tenerife has streamlined the processes for accessing the Trails of Teide National Park during snow and ice conditions for federated mountain enthusiasts, with a daily cap of 100 individuals, as announced by the island’s governing body on Saturday.

Consequently, federated climbers will be permitted to traverse the trails provided they possess essential winter gear (including technical attire, crampons, and an ice axe) and have completed a responsible declaration along with the required authorisation via the Tenerife On application.

The council highlights that previously a capacity certification from the relevant federations was mandatory, but this requirement has now been replaced by the responsible declaration, a decision they assert was made in agreement with representatives of mountain sports organisations.

Access Control

The Cabildo, in order to “protect the natural environment and manage the number of visitors”, has implemented an online booking system through the Tenerife On platform.

This initiative includes the trails: PNT 07 White – Pico Mountain of Teide (between the summit of the white mountain and the junction with PNT 11: viewpoint of the fortress), path PNT 09 Teide – Pico Viejo (from the junction between PNT 09 Teide – Pico Viejo – Mirador of the Noses of the Teide and PNT 32 23 The black regatones), and PNT 28 Chafarí.

The reservation request process will be supported by an on-site monitoring system, tasked with ensuring that hikers possess the necessary authorisation and meet the minimum equipment criteria.

Additionally, at these checkpoints, users will be informed of any prohibitions due to adverse weather conditions or other factors that render the paths unsafe. Noncompliance with these restrictions will result in penalties as per current regulations.

Therefore, during periods of ice or snow on the specified trails, only those federated individuals with the required experience, as evidenced by their responsible declaration and the authorisation processed through the Tenerife On platform, will be permitted access.

Furthermore, under normal regulations—when the trails are accessible to the public—an agreement has been established to reserve 10% of the 300 daily permits for Canarian climbers holding a federative licence, which will be made available up to 48 hours in advance.

In all cases, these individuals must request authorisation through the Tenerife On application.
