Tenerife Prepares for Volcanic Eruption with Response Drill in September

The Cabildo de Tenerife is coordinating a volcanic response drill to be conducted in Garachico, located in the northern region of the island, during the month of September. This exercise will be incorporated into the EU-Modex, which is the civil protection mechanism established by the European Union.

The aim of the drill is to enhance the readiness and response capabilities for a potential volcanic emergency on the island. It will involve experts, authorities, and members of the community at large, as stated by the Cabildo on Tuesday.

To achieve this, a set of tasks has been outlined, which have been entrusted to the University of La Laguna (ULL) in a strategic manner. These tasks will culminate in the organisation of workshops based on collaborative work.

The University will be responsible for providing assistance and support to organise the exercise focused on the development of the insular action plan addressing volcanic risk (PAIV).

The initiative includes three phases: initial work involving information gathering, analysis, and organisation; support and simulation assistance; and a final phase dedicated to analysing the conclusions drawn from the efforts made.

Furthermore, it is anticipated that five thematic working groups will be established to integrate the responses from professional teams and facilitate the outdoor simulation.

The ULL will be tasked with defining the structure and planning of the working tables essential for the smooth execution of the exercise, which is a key component for ensuring a simulation as realistic as possible.
