The Cabildo de Tenerife, via Metroenife, has received submissions from three esteemed companies with global experience in extensive transport infrastructure for the Northern Train Ideas Contest. This crucial initiative aims to shape the future of rail transport on the island.

The firms Sener, Ardanuy Engineering, and the Consultans-Transconsult Alliance have completed their registration for the process, contributing their expertise in rail infrastructure, sustainable mobility, and transport innovation. The winners are expected to be announced at the end of 2026.

Ideas Contest

The submission of candidacies concluded on January 31, 2025, initiating a competition that will span 20 months, concluding in September 2026.

This initiative aims to “design an innovative, efficient, and environmentally friendly railway system that is mindful of the terrain, does not consume additional land, integrates seamlessly into the Tenerife landscape, and does not disrupt the island’s urban or natural settings,” remarks the president, Rosa Dávila.

She further mentions that “the layout must adhere to the TF-5 highway route without compromising its capacity, ensuring intermodality with the tram and the future southern train, in alignment with the Sustainable Mobility Model that we are developing in the council to address a persistent issue such as road congestion and, in turn, enhance the quality of life for the people of Tenerife.”

Northern Tenerife: Sustainable and Efficient Mobility

Currently, Tenerife faces a significant traffic congestion issue in various regions, particularly along the transport corridor connecting the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and the northern area. This situation necessitates the establishment of a high-capacity public transport system that is appropriately suited to the topography of that part of the island.

Thus, the Cabildo de Tenerife has launched this ideas competition to propose rail alternatives beyond traditional systems, which must address a range of criteria and/or requirements tailored to this area of the island.
