Santa Cruz de Tenerife 19 Feb. (Europa Press) –
The Governing Council of the Cabildo de Tenerife has awarded contracts worth 3.5 million euros for the management of linguistic immersion scholarships, which will benefit approximately 400 schoolchildren.
Eight organisations will facilitate and oversee the students’ activities and accommodation during their time in the US, Canada, Ireland, and France.
Consequently, the scholarships will enable students to study abroad through three different formats, which include yearly and quarterly stays, as detailed by the Tenerife council in a statement following the conclusion of the Governing Council agreements on Wednesday.
The financial allocations for these scholarships amount to 7,500 euros for a quarter in Ireland and France, 12,000 euros per student for a quarter in Canada and the US, 12,000 euros per student for the dual programme in Canada and the US, and 16,000 euros per student for a year in Canada and the US.
The three available options comprise academic year scholarships and quarterly scholarships intended for students in 3rd of ESO, as well as dual scholarships for students in 4th of ESO.
Other Governing Council Agreements
On Wednesday, the Governing Council approved the expansion of the nursery cheque budget to 1.3 million euros, following 2,034 applications in the latest call, signifying an increase of 534 applications compared to the previous year, according to information provided by the Cabildo.
Rosa Dávila emphasised that the surge in demand highlights the growing necessity for financial assistance for the education of children under three years on the island. Consequently, an additional allocation of 100,000 euros has been approved, which will supplement the initial investment of 1.2 million euros, aimed at addressing the reserve list and ensuring no family that meets the criteria is left without support.
The municipality reminds families that the nursery cheque allows them to receive up to 800 euros to cover essential costs such as registration, care, hygiene, meals, and school uniforms, in addition to providing the freedom to choose the children’s centre.
An agreement for collaborative action between the Cabildo and the Chamber of Commerce has also been established, aimed at promoting innovation, digitalisation, and the competitiveness of the business sector in Tenerife. Furthermore, a funding line has been announced for the financial support of commercial dynamisation initiatives in urban centres across Tenerife.
Regarding road infrastructure, the Governing Council approved a collaboration agreement between the Cabildo and the City of San Cristóbal de la Laguna for the rehabilitation and conditioning of the Valley Tabares junction on the Insular Highway TF-111.
This road directly impacts the residents of Valle Tabares and Valle Jiménez, two rural areas connected by this route, with an approximate population of 2,500 individuals. The initiative also includes the assignment of the final section of the road that links Santa Cruz with Cuesta via the Campitos, aimed at enhancing its condition and functionality.
Additionally, an Educational Cooperation Agreement with the International University Isabel I of Castilla has been established for the students of this university to undertake external internships within the Insular Cabildo of Tenerife, including its autonomous bodies, consortiums, and associated public sector entities.
Concerning historical heritage, the Governing Council has sanctioned a grant of over one million euros for the restoration of the former Church of San Agustín de la Laguna. This assistance, regulated by an agreement with the City Council, will see the Cabildo and the Municipality allocate half a million euros towards the project aimed at stabilising the ruins of the east iconic temple and its subsequent restoration.
Moreover, in the primary sector, green light has been granted to the guidelines for subsidies to fishermen’s associations to encourage the consumption of local fish products.
Another funding line (150,000 euros) has also been approved for breeding associations focusing on the recovery and improvement of native livestock breeds.
