Two Cayucos carrying 157 migrants have arrived in the last few hours at El Hierro Island, as reported by maritime rescue sources and the 112 emergency services in the Canary Islands.
The first vessel was detected late on Monday afternoon approximately 10 miles southwest of the island following a distress call to 112 from one of the boat’s occupants.
The rescue operation involved the deployment of the Helimer 204, Salvamar Adhara, maritime rescue teams, and the Cuco helicopter from the Civil Guard, with the migrants disembarking at the port of La Restinga.
This Cayuco transported 69 men and four women, all appearing to be in good health.
The second vessel arrived in the early hours of Tuesday at the port of La Restinga with 84 individuals on board—81 men of sub-Saharan origin and three women, two of whom were attended to by health services for symptoms of mild hypothermia.
The Cayuco capsized in close proximity to the port, but the migrants managed to reach safety on their own.
