The Caminero’s House, located on the General Highway of the South (TF-28) in the Güimarero neighbourhood of Guaza, is set to transform into a craft centre upon completion of its renovation. As a historic site constructed at the end of the 19th century, it is currently undergoing restoration. Previously, it served as accommodation for the workers responsible for the upkeep and monitoring of this vital communication route, an essential infrastructure for the development and connectivity of the area and southern Tenerife.
This initiative stems from a community proposal aimed at reclaiming a significant aspect of Güímar’s heritage while providing a suitable environment for local artisans and potters to continue producing quality work. The local government insists that “it will be an essential resource for enhancing our cultural identity.”
The Caminero de Guaza house was a quintessential example of the infrastructure linked to the TF-28 route, one of Tenerife’s principal arteries. Over time, many of these structures fell into disuse and were left abandoned.
The Renovation
The rehabilitation project for this historical building has a budget of 364,649 euros. Planned works include roof restoration, tile replacement, treatment and reinforcement of the wooden structure, waterproofing, and improvements to the garden and water cistern. Additionally, carpentry and enhancement work will be undertaken on the external areas to ensure improved access to the site. “The aim is to revitalise rural culture and traditions,” remarked Nayra Caraballero, Councilor for Rural Development. “It will act as a community hub and strengthen residents’ connection to their history and traditions,” she stated while announcing the project.
Gustavo Pérez, the mayor of Güímar, explained that “the decision to undertake this restoration is based on the historical significance of this site, which once hosted the roads essential for the maintenance and oversight of the TF-28 communication route, playing a crucial role in the area’s development.” The Güimarero councilor noted that “the Caminero’s house, in addition to its structural restoration, will see enhancements in the surrounding environment to boost its appeal and functionality.”
