The budget for the City Council of La Laguna for the year 2025 allocates approximately 90,000 euros for the development of the project for a new Local Police station, to be situated in the structure of the former San Benito station. The Councillor for Works and Infrastructure, Ángel Chinea, elaborated during the most recent municipal plenary session, and in response to a query from Unidas Podemos regarding the matter, that “it has not yet been determined whether it will be put out to tender or if a commission will be established for the drafting of the Execution Project for the new Local Police of La Laguna, encompassing the range of activities to be included in said project.”

According to subsequent details from the department, all activities to be undertaken are currently under review, taking into account the requirements put forth by the citizen security sector, including services, vehicles, and materials that will be directed to this site, among other considerations.

Furthermore, they noted that the building designated for the new police station cannot be demolished or reconstructed; that is to say, its structure must remain intact, which means that only renovations and adaptations can be made to meet the needs of the Local Police, enabling them to fulfil their duties effectively within this location.

In light of this, the document will also address the number of floors to be constructed in the subsoil of the car park, the usage and restoration of this facility, and the internal layout of the building, which contributes to the complexity of the process, they indicated.

The site of the former San Benito station is presently functioning as public parking. Last year, the Laguito City Council took the initiative to remove the metal awning that had been in place. The old station building remains in situ, which is set to become the future police station for La Laguna Local Police. In 2023, the Government of the Canary Islands granted the use of this former Guaguas station to the Aguere Consistory.
