New constructions, enhancement of existing facilities, and the conceptualisation of ambitious projects. This is the strategy of Cabildo de Tenerife for the medium-term outlook regarding water, both potable and for irrigation on the island. The planning underpins the investment of 3.8 million euros aimed at combating drought and improving hydraulic infrastructure. This funding will enable the Insular Water Council of Tenerife (CIATF) to initiate various projects (1.7 million euros), enhance current operations (1.4 million euros), and draft new initiatives (634,000 euros).
Water Security
The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, states: “This investment is part of our strategy to ensure water security in Tenerife. At the Cabildo, we are taking determined actions to reinforce the Integral Water Cycle and modernise our infrastructure. Our objective is for Tenerife to become more resilient against drought and to ensure that no productive sector suffers due to lack of water resources.”
Financial Boost
The Minister of Natural Environment, Sustainability, and Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, underscores that “this represents an essential financial boost to continue our work. It highlights the allocation of 1.2 million euros for the urban supply corridor in northern Tenerife Phase A: Los Campitos-Valle Molina. Additionally, 500,000 euros have been designated for desalted and regenerated water pipelines from San Isidro to the Link of the South Tenerife Airport (West Expansion Phase I) and to the Andori Industrial Polygon (West Expansion Phase II).
Infrastructure Enhancement
Regarding the 1.4 million euros, funds are designated for improving infrastructure that is currently being executed in both the north and south of the island. Consequently, approximately 770,500 euros are allocated for the execution of adduction and products from the EDAS of Cruz de Rarifs (La Guancha), alongside 100,000 euros for enhancements to the treatment station and emissary of the Silos (Low Island). As for initiatives in the South, 200,000 euros have been approved for the expansion of the EDAM of Granadilla, 190,000 euros for the Edam de Fonsalía, and 100,000 euros for the installation of photovoltaic panels for self-consumption at the EDAM of Abona. Lastly, 100,000 euros are set aside for an early warning system (instrumentation and works for automatic hydrological information systems).
Long-term Initiatives
Additionally, the Tenerife Water Council is strategically planning to address the island’s necessary projects. In this vein, approximately 634,000 euros are allocated for the drafting of various projects, which include the study of regenerated waters in Abona and the utilisation of the El Río dam in Arico. Likewise, preliminary documents will be prepared for the design of the Sanitation and purification system for the Baja-Fase II Island, improvements to the promotion of Juan Fernández (Tacoronte), and the final stretch of the general collector of Valle de Guerra, along with the transportation system for desalinated brackish water that serves the northwest-east territorial system. The contribution from the Cabildo to the Insular Water Council will also facilitate the drafting of the Reversible Electrodialysis Project (EDR) at the wastewater treatment station (WWTP) of Granadilla de Abona, as well as for the sanitation, purification, and regeneration projects of Metropolitan II (Santa Cruz-La Laguna-El Rosario).
