The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has issued a fine of €1,500 to a local resident for repeatedly feeding pigeons on public streets, in violation of the Municipal Ordinance concerning the protection and keeping of animals, which classifies this behaviour as a serious infraction.
In a press release, the Municipality clarified that this action was observed numerous times by Local Police officers and supported by technical reports from the Public Services Department.
The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, stated that “adherence to municipal regulations by all residents is crucial to ensure health and balance in public areas. Thus, we cannot permit actions that disrupt coexistence and create health hazards in the city.”
Meanwhile, Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Public Services, emphasises that “this is not an isolated fine, but rather a result of repeated violations of the regulations, despite prior warnings.”
“Feeding animals irresponsibly on public streets can result in health issues and an increase in pests, thus it is crucial to take decisive action.”
The Municipality reaffirms its commitment to enforcing regulations appropriately and urges residents to honour the municipal laws regarding animal keeping and protection to ensure common well-being and hygiene in the public spaces of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
This is not the first instance of a fine being imposed in the capital of Tenerife for such activities; last June, the City Council fined a resident €2,250 for a similar infraction.
The standard fine is usually set at €1,500 but may increase if multiple infractions of a similar nature occur within a year.
