Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 11 Feb. (Europa Press) –
The vice president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Lope Afonso, alongside the Minister of Housing, Sonia Hernández, announced on Tuesday the corporation’s involvement in the Autonomous State-Community of the Canary Islands for the development of a total of 674 affordable, energy-efficient rental homes, part of the recovery and resilience effort financed by the European Union’s Next Generation funds.
Out of the total housing planned in the Canary Islands under this agreement, 134 will be constructed in Tenerife, specifically within the municipalities of Adeje (51), Guía de Isora (24), and Arona (59).
The Cabildo will allocate €4.4 million to co-finance these dwellings, which complements the €20 million previously dedicated to active housing schemes, land initiatives, and housing rehabilitation in the last fiscal year. Furthermore, €15.7 million has been committed for this year (including the €4.4 million from this latest agreement) along with €2,850,000 earmarked for the 2025 allocation linked to the agreement between the Cabildo and Icavi (Government of the Canary Islands).
Vice President Lope Afonso stated in a release that since the outset of their term, they aimed to “position the council as a valuable resource for Tenerife, striving to alleviate the issue of housing accessibility,” recognising it as “one of the primary concerns of the populace.”
Afonso highlighted that “enhancing housing policies to provide viable solutions is a priority, underscoring our commitment in this area.”
In agreement, the Minister of Housing, Sonia Hernández, asserted that inter-governmental cooperation “is crucial to address the housing crisis and offer effective solutions to the social issue surrounding home accessibility.”
Since the commencement of their mandate, the Cabildo’s financial support for affordable housing promotion has risen to €38.5 million, leading to the launch of various plans and initiatives which, once executed, will result in the construction or approval of 1,134 homes for this purpose.
