Santa Cruz de Tenerife 10 Feb. (Europa Press) –
The Secretary of Organisation of the Canary PSOE, Nira Fierro, commented this Monday on the recent remarks made by President Fernando Clavijo regarding his government partner, praising the “bravery” of his deputy Manuel Domínguez and the dedication of the Canarian PP in their efforts to find a resolution for the immigration crisis.
Fierro anticipates that the ‘bravery’ mentioned by the President of the Canary Islands will manifest in the Congress of Deputies when it comes time to vote on the new agreement on which the central and regional governments are collaborating for the timely transfer of 4,500 minor migrants from the Canary Islands and Ceuta.
Otherwise, he emphasised in a statement, “it will merely be hot air, the bravery of façade.”
“When President Clavijo commends Mr. Domínguez for his bravery, we assume he is alluding to the votes of the Canarian deputies from the Popular Party in Congress,” remarked the socialist leader, recalling that the votes of the six parliamentary members representing the Canarian PP in the upper house could be crucial for the success of this extraordinary transfer.
In his view, the accolades and gratitude expressed by the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, who also holds governmental responsibilities within this archipelago, would only make sense in this context.
According to Fierro, “it will only come down to one approach” and is advocating for a proposal based on territorial and socioeconomic criteria that have been in place since 2022, applicable to all political entities, including the Popular Party, which the Canary Islands have already deemed as “reasonable and sensible.”
The Secretary of Organisation of the Canary PSOE has also refuted the notion that “no autonomous community will be excluded” from this agreement, while acknowledging that certain regions have undertaken prior efforts that deserve recognition.
“We hope and expect that bravery will be shown through the votes of the deputies of the Canarian Popular Party in the Congress of Deputies, which is where decisions are made, rather than referring to this new agreement in derogatory terms, as the Popular Party has done thus far.”
