Santa Cruz de Tenerife Implements New Ordinance Ending Free Neighborhood Parking

The Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has initiated a public consultation on its official website, preceding the development of the regulated parking ordinance project for the municipality.

The aim of this consultation, which will be open until 7th March, is “to collect the views of individuals and the most representative organisations that may be impacted by the forthcoming regulation,” stated the mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, in an announcement.

Bermúdez highlights that parking regulation “is a vital tool designed to enhance the quality of life for residents and to promote the harmonious coexistence of various transport modes” within the city.

The Councillor for Mobility, Evelyn Alonso, notes that the ordinance “ensures a fair allocation of parking spaces, allowing for rotation in zones with restricted parking while prioritising the requirements of individuals with reduced mobility.”

She emphasises that the municipality has 65,000 parking spaces on the roads and experiences “a substantial number” of trips from neighbouring municipalities, which “significantly amplifies” the need for parking for non-residents, alongside the “high levels of movement” between districts.

The public consultation specifies that “these identified needs represent an opportunity to enhance public space through appropriate regulation, involving the redistribution and efficient management of parking spots to guarantee fairer access for residents, visitors, and users with specific requirements, such as those with reduced mobility or vehicles for loading and unloading.”

Additionally, it states that “the implementation of measures such as pricing or time-regulated parking would aid in improving turnover in areas of high demand, freeing up spaces for new users and diminishing illegal parking.”

The City Council of Santa Cruz asserts that the implementation of areas with blue rotation zones and green zones for residents “will not only advantage residents by guaranteeing their access to local parking, but will also enhance turnover in commercial districts.”
