The initiatives being formulated for the enhancement and modernisation of the island’s two airports will incorporate stops for the train at Tenerife Sur and for the tram in La Laguna, situated in the north of Tenerife.
This was highlighted yesterday by the president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, during a press conference following the Governing Council, where she was joined by the Insular Vice President, Lope Afonso. In this briefing, she described the investment of €800 million for both ventures, announced last Tuesday by the Aena executive team, as “historical”.
Dávila acknowledged the collaborative meetings held with AENA since 2023 to coordinate these initiatives, noting that “AENA has integrated numerous suggestions from the Cabildo, including the cave or tunnel that will accommodate the arrival of the Del Sur train,” she stated. She also mentioned that “the arrival of the tram at the North Airport” is included in the plan currently being developed.
Consequently, both airports will feature the creation of transport interchanges at pivotal locations to facilitate connections between buses, taxis, trams, and trains, thereby optimising travel times while minimising reliance on private vehicles. For the South Airport, the proposed solution involves constructing a tunnel or cave to house the train stop.
Concerning timelines, the island president explained that the technical project for the new Termefe Sur Terminal is expected to be finalised by the end of this first semester. This will allow for the commencement of the administrative and environmental processes, with plans to tender it by 2027 under the Dora III 2027-2031 framework, while that of Tenerife Norte will be delayed by six months.
Dávila emphasised that “if we consider both airports collectively, we would be speaking of the third largest airport system in Spain, servicing 20 million passengers” and providing connections to around 140 destinations. She underlined that these plans are “not intended to increase mass tourism,” but rather to focus on quality improvements, functionality, and the incorporation of sustainability and safety criteria.
Regarding the Railway Network of General Interest, this will play a significant role in financing both projects.
During the Governing Council session, a tender was approved for the drafting of eight road improvement and refurbishment initiatives across the island, entailing an investment of €1.2 million aimed at enhancing safety for both vehicular traffic and pedestrians.
Roads
The routes involved include the TF-272, connecting Barranco Grande and La Esperanza; the TF-82, from Santiago del Teide to Tamaimo; the TF-42, in Buenavista del Norte; the TF-64, in Abona Granadilla; the TF-134, in the Roque de las Bodegas area of Santa Cruz; the older TF-13, at the Agua de Dios Barranco in La Laguna; the pedestrian walkway along the TF-29 road in Santa Cruz; and the TF-265, as it runs through Llano del Moro.
With respect to equality and diversity, progress was reported on the road map for the forthcoming approval of the Insular Strategic Framework for LGBTIQA+ diversity. The aim is to create a consensual document to enhance LGBTIQA+ diversity policies, setting out the road map to be followed during the 2025-2030 period.
Meanwhile, Lope Afonso announced an extension of the Insular Plan for Cultural Infrastructure (2016-2027) until 31 December 2028, which “will ensure the continuation of ongoing projects and facilitate the inclusion of new strategic actions.”
In the area of the primary sector, the Governing Council of Cabildo Tenerife allocated €40,000 towards the establishment of an auxiliary irrigation reservoir in the Field area, thereby supporting the ongoing experimental cultivation projects for coffee and avocados.
