Santa Cruz is gearing up to become “a premier outdoor sports facility,” and to achieve this, various projects will commence this year to develop new public areas for the practice of an array of disciplines, as stated by the Councillor for Sports, Alicia Cebrián (pp).

Upcoming amenities include climbing walls, designated for climbing activities, situated within the Las Delicias de Ofra complex; the city’s first Pumptrack, a track with inclines intended for skateboards, bicycles, or scooters, which will be installed at the old glydiol struggle arena; the establishment of a vast sports area at Las Teresitas focused on maritime and sandy sports, and the refurbishment of the Skate Park on Anaga Avenue.

Quality of Life

The Mayor detailed that this sector will receive a budget of 8.4 million euros this year, an increase of two million compared to 2024. This funding will be utilised to “enhance the quality of life for residents through sport, additionally to support socially beneficial projects and continue aiding both federated and individual sports within the municipality.”

Regarding the planned investments in sports, Cebrián revealed that 242,000 euros will be allocated for accessibility upgrades at the municipal pool and the Pancho Suárez fighting arena; 85,000 euros for the Pumptrack, which is set for completion in 2026, with funding from the Cabildo (187,000 euros) and the Canary Islands Government (1.2 million euros); a 50,000-euro investment for the Las Teresitas sports zone; renovations of the Ana Bautista pavilion, which is scheduled to begin in August, amounting to 340,000 euros; and the perimeter fencing of the Delicias court, totalling 170,000 euros.

The renovations for Quico Cabrera’s changing rooms will cost 75,000 euros; the changing rooms at Juan Santamaría football field will require 174,000 euros; works at the Taganana court will be carried out at a cost of 418,000 euros; and the Miguel Pintor school pool will undergo remodelling at a price of 300,000 euros to make it accessible to the public outside of school hours. The climbing project is projected at one million euros; and the works at the Retamas-Altafit pool will also commence, alongside the tender for the extensive refurbishment of the Acidalio Lorenzo pool. Additionally, construction will proceed at the football fields in Tíncer, Barranco Grande, and Llano del Moro, along with the courts at San Fernando, Tíncer, and Salamanca schools. This is complemented by maintenance contracts for facilities, totalling 900,000 euros.
