Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 6 Feb. (Europa Press) – The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has taken centre stage on a new postal stamp, featuring the image of the Queen of 2024, Corina Mrazek, a distinction that the Chicharrera festivities have received for only the second time in its history.
The Carnival house hosted the unveiling of the stamp titled “Popular festivals. Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife” on Thursday, where Mrazek was the guest of honour, according to a press release from the town hall.
The first such occasion occurred in 1984, when the 1982 queen, María del Pino Martín, was featured on the stamp, making her the first individual outside of the Royal House to have this distinction.
This time, the stamp showcases the Tarif Characteristic fantasy costume, embellished with feathers, rhinestones, and sequins, as stated by the City Council.
With a circulation of 2,000,000 copies released for the first time on January 30 of this year, the Spanish philatelic community “celebrates a tradition that intertwines music, art, and folklore, solidifying its position as one of the most lively cultural expressions in the country.”
According to the city’s mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, “it is a privilege” that Correos has chosen to honour the city and all those involved in the carnival, which makes this celebration possible. This is also the second time the event has been recognised, following the queen of 1982 being featured on the 1984 stamp.
Nuria Lera from Correos expressed gratitude to the City Council for the opportunity to present the stamp at the Carnival House. She pointed out that “two million stamps have been circulated, so we hope to share the carnival spirit across Spain.”
