Santa Cruz de Tenerife 6 Feb. (Europa Press) –
The fairground is set to host the initial phase of the children’s murgas contest this Friday, commencing at 7:00 p.m., marking the onset of the Carnival contests. This year, it will be Cabito who opens the fairground stage, followed by geekiky*s, long languages, raviscuditos, mamelons, twisting, distracted, and carricitos, who will conclude the evening.
A total of 15 groups will take part in this year’s contest, which will culminate on Saturday, February 8, with the celebration of the second phase, following a decision by the Councillor for Fiestas, Javier Caraballero, to streamline the number of phases to two. Additionally, both phases will be free of charge, as stated by the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in a press release.
At the conclusion of this final session featuring the children’s murgas, the identity of the winning murgas will be revealed. Each group will present two contest pieces, along with their introduction and farewell.
The presentation jury consists of Marta Palmero, a characterisation technician and stylist; Cristina Alejandra Martín González, a senior costume and show technician; Beatriz Delgado, a Fine Arts graduate and professor of graphic design at the Fernando Estévez School of Art and Higher Design; Noemí Torres, a Higher Technician in Styling and Clothing, and Maira Yvett Morillo, a designer, dressmaker, and seamstress.
For the interpretation category, the award adjudicators will include Eduardo Hernández Roncero, a musician from the municipal band and lyrical singer; Teresa de Jesús Jerónimo, a choir director, music educator, and holder of a degree in Musical Language Pedagogy; and Mercedes Cabrera, a lyrical singer who directs a Children’s Choir.
Also involved are Daida Reyes, an announcer, presenter, and television producer; Alicia Rodríguez, an announcer, actress, presenter, and the voice of the tram; JJ Rodríguez-Lewis, a journalist, author, doctor of law, and former manager of Oafar; and Martha Sofía Quiñones, an actress and scriptwriter for the Company of Puppet Sunday, as well as a director of theatre schools and amateur theatre.
Journalists Sara Ramos and Nira Casanova will oversee the hosting of both phases of the Children’s Murgas contest. Admission to this event, which is free for the first time, can be acquired at the entrances to the fairground, until capacity is reached.
Furthermore, the contest will be broadcast live by Mírame Televisión, alongside Channel 4 Television and Now Televisión, while Televisión Canaria plans to air it later.
The City Council, following directives from the Directorate of the Security Plan, will establish a designated area at the entrance to the fairground for baby buggies, as well as for items such as motorcycle helmets, sharpened umbrellas, and liquid containers with caps.
Children’s food containers are exempt from this regulation. Security personnel will be present to supervise deposited items and ensure their return to the owners following the event.
Increased Attention for Disability
The 2025 Carnival of Santa Cruz will increase the number of orange disability points by 13, according to the City Council.
Consequently, specialised assistance services will be available for individuals with physical, intellectual, and sensory disabilities, as well as support for persons with reduced mobility, blind or deaf individuals, and anyone requiring assistance due to a disability.
Services will also include Spanish sign language interpreters, a sensitive backpack service, and noise-cancellation systems for those with hyper-sensitivity to sound.
